Many factors contribute to this but there are some factors well and truly within our control and as I drive around and see the wrong items in the wrong bins it's clear that as individual families we could be doing more.

Recycling Bin

How clear are you over the 3 bins that Councils provide to you? The most common misconception is the materials that can go in the Recycling bin. Soft Plastics, Styrofoam, meat tray packaging and broken crockery can NOT. These items should be placed in your normal waste bin. You should never put your plastic bottles in a soft plastic bag and place it in the recycling bin. We need to take control of what we put in our bins - it's simply not good enough to break the rules due to laziness. Our future generations are depending on us!

Don't take it too far though....
Organic Bin

Green bins or Organic bins can now have much more put in them reducing the amount going in your waste bin. Food scraps, tissues, pet droppings, small amounts of soiled papers or card board - eg Pizza Boxes can all go in the Organics bin. If you are a green thumb then all of these items can be used to create your own compost/mulch. How to mulch. If you have excess green waste then please contact Bag Brothers who offer a paid service in the Marion, Holdfast, Onkaparinga and other council zones.

Waste Bin

Remember if you are putting it in the Red lidded waste bin then you can be sure it's going directly to land fill. So take the time and effort to make sure we recycle as much as possible. Personally our recycling bin is
chockers most fortnights now but we have made massive inroads into reducing our Waste bin to about ½ filled or 2-3 bags of waste. For a family of 4 I think that's reasonable. Challenge yourself or your friends to do the same.

Hard Waste

Before booking a hard waste collection have a think about donating or recycling items to reduce waste to land fill. Some councils will sort through hard waste but some will not. Everyone is entitled to some kind of
Hard Rubbish collection. Each council has varying number of collections allowed and size of piles allowed. There are common restrictions such as glass, tyres, building material, concrete, green waste and there is usually a wait period that can be as long as 10 weeks. Hard Waste Removal provide a paid service offering within the week collections. What you may be doing to help the cause may seem small and perhaps even insignificant but if 10million people do it than all of a sudden it becomes significant and very impactful, even powerful. 

Kids Toys -
     Unwanted kids toys, rather than throw them away or even pay for them to be thrown out, consider putting them on Gumtree for "free pick up" You don't even have to be home - just say 'toys left near letterbox, first in best dress"
SAVERS is also one of the better charities that seem to give life to old toys and clothing. There standards are a little lower so even if they are slightly damaged they will still make the shelf and hopefully go to a better place.
TOY LIBRARIES are great for giving kids new toys on a regular basis without paying a single cent! Next time you hear the words "I want this" have a think about wether its really something you need as a family or is it just going to be another toy that gets played with for an hour or a week tops and end up thrown out in next years clean up.... Using a toy library, they can play with it for a week or two than return it and swap it for something new- if they loved it they can hire it again in a few months. You can also ask toy libraries if they would like to take some of your unplayed with toys rather than throwing them out. Toy libraries are at most community libraries.

2019-20 will be the end of a vicious upward trend. Was less than $50 3 years ago... Its a good thing! Make us think more about our decisions to just throw something and perhaps seek alternate options. Plenty of waste now can be recycled and plenty of things we turf could easily have its career prolonged at another business or home.
